UnderMining Life: Activists threatend in South Africa

지난 3월 22일, 남아프리카 공화국의 채굴반대 활동가 시코스피 바주카 레드히브가 괴한의 총에 맞아 살해당하는 사건이 있었습니다. 아래 영상은 레드히브가 채굴반대 활동을 했던 지역주민들의 인터뷰를 담은 영상입니다. 거대개발자본에 맞서 대자연과 삶의 터전을 지키려는 활동가들이 겪는 위험한 현실을 지역 주민들의 증언을 통해 확인해 봅시다.[영상소개]
스피위 마지부코의 강렬한 영상은 남아프리카공화국의 와일드 코스트(Wild Coast)와 줄루란드(Zululand) 지역에서 채굴 반대 활동가들이 겪고 있는 위협을 폭로한다. 솔로베니(Xolobeni) 지역 주민들은 지난 10년간 호주 광산채굴기업 MRC가 티타늄이 매장 된 사구를 채굴하는 것을 막기 위해 싸우고 있다. 선조 때 부터 1500년간을 살아온 낙원과 같은 땅을 지키고 있는 폰도(Pondo)사람들에게 돌아 오는 것은 증가하는 위협과 폭력이다. 이들의 이야기를 담은 영상이 제작 된지 일주일이 후인 3월 22일, 채굴반대 활동가 시코스피 바주카 레드히브가 끔찍하게 살해당했다. 레드히브는 그의 15살짜리 아들이 지켜보는 가운데 경찰로 추정되는 두 남자에게 머리에 8발의 총에 맞아 사망했다. 다음 총격 대상자는 와일드 코스트에서 생명의 위협을 받고 있는 다른 3명의 활동가와 영상에 참여한 논헤레 므부투마이다. 줄루란드에서 활동중인 채굴반대 활동가들 역시 살해위협에 시달리고 있다. 경찰이 최근 피라 네데만데의 살해 협박을 통보 받은 가운데, 마부소 목사는 현재 살해 위협으로부터 도망 다니고 있다.
솜헤레 탄광에 의해 착취당하고 부패한 지도자에 의해 침묵 당한지 8년, 지역주민들이 의회사무실 앞에서 항의행진을 벌였다. 그날 저녁 항의행진을 조직했던 봉가니 피어스의 차는 불태워졌다.

Sphiwe Mazibuko's powerful film exposes the intimidation of anti-mining activists, in South Africa, on the Wild Coast and Zululand. Xolobeni residents have fought for 10 years to prevent the Australian company, Mineral Commodities Limited, from mining their titanium rich dunes. The unwavering response of the Pondo people to protect their traditional lands, a paradise where they have lived for over 1500 years, has been met by increasing intimidation and violence that culminated in the violent murder of Sikhosiphi “Bazooka” Rhadebe, on 22 March 2016, a week after the completion of this film. Two men posing as police arrived in the evening and shot Rhadebe 8 times in the head in front of his 15 year old son. The next person on the hit list, Nonhle Mbuthuma, is featured in this film together with three other activists on the Wild Coast whose lives have been threatened. In Zululand, mining activists from Fuleni, Somkhele and Melmoth also face death threats. Reverend Mavuso is currently in hiding for fear of his life, while the police have been notified of recent death threats to Phila Ndimande. Bongani Pearce’s vehicle was burned after a protest march following 8 years of being silenced by corrupt traditional leaders and exploited by Somkhele Tendele’s Somkhele coal mine. The film was commissioned by Mupo Foundation (now EarthLore) and funded by the European Commission.
